This Is Oregon!

“Cape Kiwanda Drama”  Hoku Manga print by Dee Boyles Welcome to Oregon, a place I have the good fortune to call home.  Oregon is truly beautiful.  I know there are numerous places that the same can be said of, yet there is something special about this land.  Living in the lushness of the Willamette Valley it takes one only a small road trip in any direction to be in a completely different landscape, a stunning one! A one hour drive will lead you to the Pacific Coast where one never knows what will greet them. At times it is quite dramatic and others times…

Beauty is Abundunt

This past month I was overwhelmed and overstimulated with Beauty! Since October the Seattle Art Museum has been showing the works of American painter Andrew Wyeth.  I had the opportunity to see this amazing show. It was much to absorb, with well over 100 paintings on display.  Known for his work in the medium of egg tempura, Wyeth depicted hyper realistic scenes of rural life that are stark and at times oddly disquieting yet retain a simple calmness.  All were truly stunning in their beauty! Wyeth’s attention to the smallest of detail shows sensitive awareness to his surroundings, even the smallest…

Wishing you a Warm Wonderful Winter

I do hope you have a wonderful winter! The “dog days of summer” are pretty sweet yet there is something special about this season. It is my favorite time of year to take the camera out on the back roads. The weather doesn’t deter, it just adds to the appeal. The moodiness of the low clouds an Oregon winter brings suits me. I like going out into the lonely “Wyeth” landscapes or better yet a thick blanket of fog. Then the world changes. It’s like walking in a dream wide awake! Surrealism comes to life. And there is nothing better…

The camera is just a tool

“Oh you must have a really good camera”!  These words are often heard by myself and other photographers.  They are said with sincere praise and appreciation for my work and for that I am grateful. taken with a Canon 5D Mark II My reply is yes, I do have a great camera!  Actually I have many great cameras that I shoot professionally with. They include my cell phone,  a box camera from the 1950’s, a toy camera with all of its wonderful light leaks and I am in the process of making a camera out of cardboard!  Many would say…

FLOWERS!!

“April showers bring May flowers” and they are starting to bloom!  Yes!  I am so hungry for their color and sweet fragrance.  It has been a long wet winter here in the Northwest and while my back yard is still like a sodden sponge of water I have brought flowers to the walls that surround me! Looking into the windows of my studio gallery you will see a perfect Master Copy of Georgia O’Keefe’s “White Flower on Red Earth”, a piece that “desert transplant” artist Mercedes painted this past January while the snow fell outside. The center of attention is the 56″ x 44″ Red Rose by Mercedes truly stunning in it’s size…

The flowers that bloom in the spring tra-la

It’s been a long cold season and we are all a little winter weary.  I feel for you Lake Tahoe who has a record 685″ of snow and still counting.  I feel for you Portland, Oregon who has been given the designation of the most winter weary city in America.   To our neighbor up north, Canada you have had it cold! We all are waiting for spring to decide to show its face but till it does I would like to give you a little remembrance of what is coming. May it lift your spirits and “breathe promise of merry sunshine”!…

BELIEVE IN BEAUTY

“I believe in beauty. I also believe that sharing of beauty will make all our lives better. Here is hoping that what I bring makes your life better.” The show will be up through the month of October in conjunction with the ART HARVEST STUDIO TOUR OF YAMHILL COUNTY.  http://www.artharveststudiotour.org

Think on theses things

Just recently I read an article how science research is showing that the words we speak actually restructure our brain.   Those positive words, when we dwell on them, changes the function of our brain and over time the very structure, so much so that it may affect the way we look at reality.  The same goes for those negative thoughts.  They stop our brains from operating the way it is supposed to. So I would think it also is with images. Ansel Adams once said “A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is…
